IBS & Hypnosis

I have recently completed a specialist hypnotherapy course for IBS (at Skills 24), which contributes to my continual professional development as a Clinical Hypnotherapist. I am passionate about finding and researching up to the minute ways of helping clients create solutions to their problems. IBS can have a profoundly significant effect on sufferers’ lives. I would encourage anyone who thinks that they have IBS to obtain a formal diagnosis from their GP or family doctor in order to rule out anything more sinister. Once you have a formal diagnosis then you have positively identified what you have and this gives us an idea of how best to deal with it.


To date there have been many clinical trials worldwide and abstracts written on IBS & Hypnosis. Many have had their findings published academically in highly respected journals like the BMJ, which detail the effectiveness of using hypnosis in treating IBS. The NHS webpage on IBS states that “hypnosis is used to change your unconscious mind’s attitude towards your symptoms”.


This would suggest that you can positively re-frame your attitudes and feelings towards your IBS. Many sufferers accept their situation and stoically feel that they have to put up with it but this does not have to be the case. You can change your attitude to your illness so that you do not have to feel helpless and stuck within the vicious cycle of its symptoms and all of the stresses that it brings with it.


Many people accept nowadays that the mind and body are inter-related and are one and the same and that a positive change in thinking has a corresponding effect on how the body behaves. If we change the way we deal with stress, begin to understand how we make ourselves stressed and then alter our behaviour…the likelihood is that we will not become stressed in the first place. We can begin to practice relaxation by creating personal strategies and recognising our personal stress triggers. As stress is a significant component surrounding IBS, it would be logical to suggest that less stress would equal fewer symptoms and less flare ups of IBS. By realising that there are solutions, we realize that we are no longer helpless and can create a level of control to help overcome or diminish our IBS, making it become manageable.


Hypnosis can offer significant help on how to reduce the symptoms of IBS. Sometimes we can get stressed about the very thought of getting stressed. An individually tailored treatment can offer solutions and strategies that are personal, helping to promote relaxation, rebalancing the mind and body and re-framing how you feel about your IBS, helping to change the limits that it puts upon your life. Once a session of hypnosis has been undergone, then all it takes is a little bit of ‘time out’ every day. Just a few minutes every day and with practice, you could get your life back on track, see positive results and manage your IBS successfully.
